The New York Times Company has hardly made it a secret that it was looking to unload the Worcester Telegram & Gazette and Boston Globe, the two newspapers it paid more than a combined $1 billion for several years ago. Less than four years ago, Ralph Crowley Jr., president of Polar Beverages Corp. and Harry Whitin, retired editor of the T&G, were reported to be this close to buying the Worcester paper from the Times. The sale never materialized and the Times retained ownership. After announcing on Wednesday that it is selling its New England Media Group, which includes the Boston Globe and the T&G, one thing seems clear: At some point, there will be a new owner of the largest daily newspaper in Central Mass.
