Unemployment rates in Central Massachusetts jumped in June even as more workers found jobs.
The jobless rate in the Worcester metropolitan area last month was 8.1 percent, higher than the 7.4 percent in May and higher than it was a year ago, when 7.7 percent of the local workforce was unemployed. More people looked for work in June than in May, pushing the unemployment rate up over the month.
The Leominster-Fitchburg-Gardner area had a jobless rate of 9.8 percent last month, up from 9.3 percent a year earlier. In the Athol area, 9.7 percent of the workforce was out of work last month, up from 8.9 percent the year before.
