Hector Vazquez - North High Baseball Team. Hector went 3-3 for the Polar Bears with a pair of doubles in a 15-2 loss to West Boylston - one of the top teams in Central Mass.
Previous Players
Liz Patient - Senior Pitcher, Holy Name Softball Team. Liz is among the leading hittes and pitchers in all of Central Mass. (for one of the top teams in the area). At the plate she's hitting .460, and on the mound boasts a 13-3 record and a 2.67 ERA.
Katie Roy - Senior Pitcher, Burncoat Softball Team. In a shortened 17-0 win over North, Katie pitched 5 perfect innings - striking out 10 - to help the Patriots improve to 2-0 in the Inter-High League. Michael O'Neil, Russ Mangsen, and Matt Conforti - Pitchers, West Boylston Baseball Team. The three Lions hurlers came within 2 outs of a no hitter in a 1-0 win over Maynard, allowing only a 1 out single in the 7th.
Delaney Sylvester - Freshman, Doherty Softball Team. Needing a rally in the 7th inning vs Worcester Tech, Delaney doubled in 2 runs as Highlanders came back to defeat the Eagles 10-7. On the day, Delaney was 3 for 4 with 3 RBI's)
Andrew Montiverdi - Junior Catcher, Worcester Tech Baseball Team. Andrew had 3 hits and 3 RBI's to help lead the Eagles to a 5-2 win over Valley Tech. Behind the plate, he helped starter John Boyd throw 5 innings of shutout ball. Lauren DeStephano - Sophomore, St. Peter Marian Softball Team. What a way to kick off the season - trailing in the 6th inning to Doherty, Lauren drove in the tying run with a triple, and scored the eventual game winner on a past ball. She also homered in a 10-1 win over Wachusett. Hugh Daye - Senior Guard, South High Basketball. Hugh led the Colonels with 20 points in a tough 56-53 loss to Fitchburg in the Central Mass. Div. 1 Semi-Finals. With 1:38 Daye buried jumper as the :30 second shot clock expired to put South up 53-51. But Fitchburg scored the final 5 points of the game to pick up the win in one of the most exciting games of the tourney. Sydney Bloomstein - Senior Forward, Millbury Basketball. Sydney scored 12 points to help propel the Wollies back to the State Championship game in thier 50-36 win over Waconah. It's marks the 4th straight year that Millbury reached the State Final. She combined with fellow Senior and past Player of the Week Julie Frankian to give Millbury one of the most potent 1-2 punches in the area. Elizabeth Grip - Freshman Forward, Shrewsbury Basketball. Elizabeth led the Colonials with 13 points in the Central Mass. Div. 1 Tournament Final 46-36 loss to rival Algonquin. The freshman also added 6 blocks in the 3rd quarter of the 35-30 semifinal win over Holy Name.
Antonio Jones - Sophomore Guard, Doherty Basketball. Jones scored 16 points - part of a balanced Highlanders attack, in their 64-56 win over 10th seeded Holy Name in the Central Mass. Div. 1 Tournament. Doherty, the 7th seed, trailed at halftime, but took the lead as the 2nd half wore on, and cemented the win at the free throw line at the end. Bilal Shakir - Senior Guard, Worcester Tech Basketball. Bilal scored 22 first half points, and 25 overall, to lead the Eagles to an 82-66 win over Bristol Plymouth in the semifinal round of the State Voke Tournament.
Eric Stenlund - Senior Forward, South High Basketball. There is no bigger win in CMass Basketball than one over St. Johns. In the Colonels 54-48 win over the Pioneers, Eric knocked down two big 3-pointers down the stretch to help seal the victory.
Ryan Bird - North Basketball. Ryan scored a team high 16 points for the Polar Bears as they hung tough in a 64-56 loss to Sutton.
Kevin Donahue - Senior Forward, Holy Name Basketball. Kevin scored 11 points and pulled down a career high 18 rebounds as the Naps knocked off Innovation Academy 66-30. The win is Holy Name's 10th on the season, and qualifies them for the Central Mass. Tournament.
Kiesha Jones - Senior Guard, Doherty Basketball. Kiesha scored her 1000th career point on a layup with 7:35 to go in the 2nd quarter as the Highlanders defeaped Main South 57-34.
Joe McCarthy - Goaltender, Worcester Ice Hockey. Joe stopped 28 of 29 shots in a 2-1 'upset' win over Oakmont. The Wildcats had lost to Oakmont 8-0 earlier in the season, and had been outscored by a combined score of 21-1 in their previous 3 meetings.
Shanelle Sims - Sophomore Forward, Burncoat. Shanelle helped the Patriots knock off city foe North 57-27 with a double double, pumping in 26 points and pulling down 10 rebounds.
Tre Watson - Senior Guard, St. Peter Marian Basketball. In a 78-69 win over 2nd ranked St. Bernards, Tre scored 12 points and added 11 assists for the Guardians, who held the lead most of the game.
Ben Symes - Junior Forward, Grafton Ice Hockey. Consistently among the leading scorers in the Coughlin Conference, Symes (along with teammates Jake Belanger, Mike Morin, and Sean Coates) scored in the Indians 4-1 win over Worcester.
Molly McCausland - Sophomore Guard, Millbury Basketball. Molly helped the Woolies get off to an early lead with 10 first half points en route to a 59-44 win over SWCL rival Shepherd Hill. Millbury led early 20-7, and led throughout.
Mariah Garrity - Junior Forward, West Boylston Basketball. In a back and forth game with Bromfield, Mariah scored a game high 20 points as the Lions held on for a 38-34 road victory. Mariah is among the leading scorers in Mid-Wach D.
Ryan Stowe - Senior Guard, Shrewsbury Basketball. Trailing by 6 at halftime, the Colonials tied the score heading in the the 4th quarter, and then took the lead with 1:05 left on the clock on Stowe's 3-pointer and held on for a 55-51 victory. Stowe led Shrewsbury with 12 points.
Bianca Langford - Junior Center, Holy Name Basketball. Bianca scored 11 points grabbed 21 rebounds, and added 3 blocks - dominating the paint - as the 8th ranked Naps picked up a home win over very good Doherty team.
James LeBouef - Senior Linebacker, Worcester Tech. James helped anchor an oustanding defensive effort in a 36-0 win over Keefe Tech with 7 tackles and 3 sacks. James also contributed offensively, catching an 80 yard touchdown pass from QB Matt Letourneau. Cheerleaders - Grafton High School. The squad took home the Southern Worcester County League Tournament trophy recently, but success is nothing new to the Grafton. Last year, the squad took home the title in the Central Mass Regionals in Division II in both the Fall and Winter, and went on to capture 3 trophies at the U.S. National Competition in Miami.
Gavin O'Neil - Senior Running Back, St. Peter-Marian High School. Gavin scored 2 touchdowns helping to lead the Guardians to a 24-0 win over Doherty, evening their record at 4-4 on the season. Clinging to a 12-0 halftime lead, Gavin broke off a 77 yard touchdown run for his 1st score, then was on the receiving end of a 19 yard pass from QB Steve Flynn for the final points of the game.
Tim Bushey - Senior Quarterback, Doherty High School. Tim helped lead Doherty to their 2nd straight win in a 33-8 win over St. Peter Marian. With great protection from his offensive line, Bushey was perfect early on - completing his 1st 6 passes on the opening drive of the game - as the Highlanders got on top early and held on for the victory.
Cheerleaders - South High School. Under the guidance of coach Lynn Boulet, the squad is not only on the field cheering on the Colonels teams during the season, in the preseason they hosted a clinic to encourage proper technique in an effort to reduce the growing # of injuries that have been attributed to cheerleading.
Mike Emco - Junior Wide Reciever, Burncoat High School. Mike did his best Randy Moss impersonation in the Patriots first win of the season, a 13-2 victory over North. Holding a slim 6-2 lead late in the 4th quarter, Mike got behind the defense and hauled in a pass from QB Drew Sunden and raced 85 yards for the touchdown to help seal the win.
Andrew Eckstrom - Senior Kicker/Defensive Back, Millbury High School. Andrew scored the opening points in the game with a 17 yard field goal, and added an extra point on the Woolies only touchdown in a 10-7 win over Uxbridge. More importantly, Andrew intercepted a pass with about a minute to go in the game to seal the deal as Millbury evened their record at 2-2.
Brian Hayes - Freshman Defensive Back, West Boylston High School. Brian helped set the tone early on in the Lions 37-6 win over Monty Tech. On Monty Tech's 1st possession, Hayes intercepted a pass at his own 12 yard line and raced 88 yards for a touchdown to put West Boylston up 7-0 en route to a big win.
Daniel Kegbeh - Sophomore Wide Receiver, Holy Name. Daniel made big contributions on both sides of the ball, in a hard fought 12-7 win over Nashoba. On offense, Kegbeh helped keep a big drive alive with a 25 yard reception the set up the Naps first touchdown. On Nashoba's ensuing drive, Kegbeh picked off a pass from the Chieftains QB to get the ball back.
Ross Fournier - Senior Tight End, Shrewsbury High School. It was a good night for the Shrewsbury HS Alumni on Homecoming, as the Colonials pitched a shutout over a talented Gardner squad, 20-0. Fournier - known more for his prowess on defense - pitched in on offense as well, catching an 8 yard touchdown pass from C.J. Butt to help Shrewsbury to a 13-0 halftime lead.
Kenny Maranda - Senior Offensive/Defensive Lineman, Grafton High School. Kenny was Mr. Everything for Grafton in a 34-6 win over Nipmuc, avenging last year's nail-biting 28-26 loss to the Warriors. Maranda was a force on both sides of the line, as the Indians moved the ball consistently on offense and held strong on defense. Maranda also handles all the kicking and punting duties for Grafton.
